Exploration in Art

Introduction

I have an about me page here https://lesasfineart.com/about. For this blog post, I will write more in-depth about why I am a student at UAF and my love for Art.  I have learned that life is a roller coaster ride with many ups and downs. What I hadn’t realized until a few years ago was that the roller coaster ride can sometimes turn you upside down.  At the end of my 23-year marriage, I had 5 kids with zero job, zero education, and zero idea of what was going to happen next.

I was blessed to find a job at The University of Alaska Fairbanks. I was grateful they took a chance on me, who had been out of the workforce for 20 years.  Working for the University has its advantages, one is the employee scholarship.  I was able to attend school for free. I am now a 48-year-old Sophomore, Majoring in Art with a Minor in Business.

My Relationship with Art.

I have always loved creating art.  Some I was good at, some not so good, but I love trying new things. As a young stay-at-home mom, we didn’t have access to all the amazing things you can find at your fingertips on the world wide web. What I had was PBS and the local library.  When my babies would take their naps I would take my break and watch the painting lessons on Public television.  Bob Ross made painting look easy, and I was inspired to give it a try.

The medium I prefer is textured acrylic paint. I tell people I get the best of both worlds in painting and sculpting. Maybe you have seen some of my work hanging up at the local brewery Latitude 65 or some First Friday events here in Fairbanks. Possibly you have attended one of my paint nights and learned a few painting techniques from me.

Art is my therapy. I am a certified art life coach. I am not a therapist, but I work with a therapist or counselor to create art projects to help you through life. Art is a wonderful therapy tool, and I use art in my daily life to calm my mind.

Art I love

The Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci is one of my favorites.

Mostly because my father would sing Nat King Cole’s Mona Lisa to me as a little girl.

I am drawn to portraits of women and pondering their life. Woman with a Towel by Edgar Degas stood out to me as I visited The Met a few summers ago. This brave woman with such confidence to have a man draw her as she finishes her bath.

When I paint, I am drawn to Landscapes and Nature.  I’m inspired by great artists like Claude Monet, Fredrich Edwin Church, and Vincent Van Gogh.
